Sport and Cultural Activities create healthy alternatives for Youth

December 2019

Many young people in South Africa do not have easy and regular access to activities that offer opportunities for positive self-discovery and self-expression and many do not have sufficient social platforms to develop constructive relationships with peers.

Mouton Citrus, one of the Foundation’s grower partners in Citrusdal in the Western Cape, runs a very active Youth Club. The young people took initiative and planned a Concert in its multi-purpose centre towards the end of last year. The Foundation motivated worker committees of other partner farms in that region to actively encourage their youth to participate. Youth from different farms responded enthusiastically to the opportunity and prepared for their participation which resulted in a very successful event late last year. One such example is the youth from Morester Farm in Piketberg also called the ‘Dream Team’, who not only displayed their musical talents but also used the opportunity to network with their peers.

Many parents and grandparents of the youth who participated, demonstrated support for their children and grandchildren and the event was a fun and meaningful community celebration of talent and potential.
