Waitrose Foundation At Work

The Gift of Sight – workers benefit from the Beukes Eyecare Project

AUGUST 2024

There are various ways in which the worker committees on our partner farms across Southern African can utilise their allocated Waitrose Foundation funds. The decision making process happens in consultation with the worker community on the farms.

Some projects run over a longer term, like establishing an aftercare centre or clinic on the farm and others relate to once off events or for instance purchasing kit for sports teams competing in local leagues. Sometimes the project focuses on the health and wellbeing of workers with a very significant and immediate impact on beneficiaries.

One example is the Eyecare project selected by the worker committee at Beukes Familie Boerdery in De Doorns. It included supplying reading glasses to workers who needed them. This particular project was given the go-ahead in December last year and in follow up, workers had to go for eye tests in order for the glasses to be ordered. An official handover followed a few months later.
Thank you to Annelle for the photos. This is certainly a reminder of how a project can greatly impact the quality of life of workers in a very practical way and how precious one's eyesight truly is. Well done to the team at Beukes.
