THINUS CORAH AND THE BEE PROJECT - 23 June 2011
Auldearn’s Bee Project made a profit of almost R7000 in it’s first year. Waitrose Foundation funding was used to buy bee hives and then these hives were hired out to the farm at a reduced rate for the pollination period. This year the project also aims to sell the honey from the hives at the Elgin Open Gardens Festival which takes place in November.
It has always been the aim to use any profits from the Waitrose Foundation Projects to aid and assist members of the Community in achieving their full potential. It was with great pride and joy that the Bee Project decided to sponsor fellow worker Thinus Corah.
Thinus Corah is a young man who was born on Auldearn Farm 31 years ago. He grew up on the farm and now works as a general worker here.
In 2007 Thinus decided to take up marathon running. That same year he ran 12 21km races, 3 marathons (42km) and even the Two Oceans (56km). It was soon evident to people in the know that Thinus has a great talent for marathon running and it was suggested that he tackle the Comrades. And so in 2008, less than a year after starting his new hobby, Thinus qualified for and participated in his first Comrades Marathan and came home with a Bill Rowan medal (silver bronze) after completing the race in 7hrs45min. The following two years Thinus earned two silver medals back-to-back in 7hrs04min and 7hrs09min respectively. This year in 2011 Thinus’ ran his fourth Comrades and although he came home with his third silver (6hrs55min) he missed the Wally Haywood medal by only 25 minutes!
He definitely intends on getting it next year. Thinus describes the atmosphere at the Comrades as magnetic. Due to his fast times he of course starts off in the A group amongst all the World Champions. The excitement is overwhelming but once they get going the only focus is on running the race and when it’s over one is physically and mentally exhausted but at the same time utterly satisfied.
Thinus’ next big dream is to run in the London Marathon in April 2012 for which he already qualifies!
