The knitting project was submitted to the Waitrose Foundation for approval in May 2009 and started a few weeks later.
This project has been one of the most successful on our farms! 14 ladies meet once a week in the Media Centre on the farm where they sit together chatting and knitting scarves and squares for blankets for their families. 4 girls have also been involved in knitting scarves for themselves. This time is very precious to them as they are away from their daily chores and have been given the opportunity of spending time doing something for themselves. As a group they have knitted squares which are in the process of being sewn together to make a blanket for a double bed. The aim it to raffle this blanket and with the proceeds they are going to spoil themselves and go into Ceres where they would like to have supper at the local SPUR. This goes to prove – that it’s not always the amount of funds available that counts. 14 ladies with a mere budget of R3000 have been given the opportunity to learn to knit, to spend meaningful time together, building up camaraderie and forming friendships.Project Pictures:
